A young woman in 1840s New York falls in love. A seemingly simple tale, but in the hands of a master storyteller it is anything but routine. This young woman is socially awkward heiress Catherine Sloper, and she is beset from all sides: by her autocratic, self-absorbed father, by her foolish, matchmaking aunt, and by the lover who is not at all what he seems.
