Leonard Vole – A pleasant, seemingly naïve young man accused of murdering an older woman who had grown fond of
him. Though he maintains his innocence, the circumstances surrounding the case make him appear
suspicious.
Romaine Heilger (Romaine Vole) – Leonard’s mysterious, sharp-minded wife. She is theatrical, unpredictable, and emotionally
controlled—sometimes fiercely loyal, sometimes coldly strategic. Her testimony becomes the most
shocking element of the trial.
Janet Mackenzie – The stern and devoted housekeeper of the murdered woman. She distrusts Leonard entirely and gives
strong, uncompromising testimony that paints him in a damaging light.
Sir Wilfrid Robarts, K.C. – Leonard’s brilliant and experienced defense lawyer. Sharp-tongued, observant, and fond of dramatic
courtroom strategy, he approaches the case with skepticism and intellect despite recovering from
illness.
Mr. Mayhew – A supportive member of Sir Wilfrid’s legal team. Practical and steady, he assists with investigations,
interviews, and case preparation.
Mr. Myers, Q.C. – The calm, confident prosecutor who methodically builds a compelling case against Leonard. He relies
heavily on logical argument and witness testimony.
Inspector Hearne – The police inspector who leads the investigation. Thorough and procedural, he presents evidence
plainly and professionally.
Greta – Sir Wilfrid’s efficient, dramatic assistant who keeps the office running smoothly and reacts strongly to
unfolding events.
