The Portrait, layered with original music, opens in the present day with an old artist recalling his youth – leaving art college and the big city in 1969 to start an artist’s co-op gallery in the remote town of Tobermory on the tip of the Bruce Peninsula. The Portrait is Smutlyo’s first play, it was selected for the Stratford Spring Works Festival in May 2014. Also an artist and author, Smutylo’s most recent book, The Memory of Water was nominated for the General Governor’s Literary Award in Non-Fiction.
