The Play That Goes Wrong

The Play That Goes Wrong play follows the misadventures of an amateur theatre group that get together once a year to stage a show, and this time it’s the mystery play Murder at Haversham Manor. As the play begins, the cast are already facing a losing battle: forgotten lines, faulty props, and broken scenery make it challenging to put on a show. But then things go from bad to worse: misunderstandings, fires, and collapsing sets make it almost impossible. Can this amateur group defeat the odds? Or will it all go wrong?

Directed by: John Flynn
Play by: Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer & Henry Shields

Dates: March 20-22 and 26-29, 2025 at 7:30pm. March 23 at 2pm.

CAST (In Order of Appearance)

James Moyse – Trevor
James is thrilled to return to the Roxy stage for the sixth time! Most recently seen in The Prom and Beauty and the Beast, he is excited to take on his first non-musical role. He extends his gratitude to Director John Flynn for the opportunity and to his fellow cast and crew for their dedication and enthusiasm in bringing this beast of a show to life.

Kathleen Jerome – Annie
Kathleen is from Owen Sound. She spent much of her dance training with both Shelia and Ann Milne, and Heather Dixon. She has training and certifications in several genres of dance and under several different methods. She attended Queen’s University for Drama and English, then completed her Master’s in Theatre History at the University of Victoria. She gained her Bachelor of Education back at Queen’s, and is now a full time English teacher at St. Mary’s High School, where she helps with Student Council, public speaking competitions, and their dramatic productions. Kathleen helps with the Roxy Star Company (theatre for adults with disabilities) and sits on the OSLT Board of Directors. She has been involved both onstage and backstage in the following OSLT productions: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat, Jake’s Women, Carousel, White Christmas, Spamalot, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, A Red Plaid Shirt, Beauty and the Beast, You Me and a Bit of Driftwood, The Game’s Afoot, and 10 Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse.

Brodie McGruer – Chris
Brodie is thrilled to hit the stage again. He has had the honour of designing and building sets for Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Ladies Foursome in recent years. His last acting role was King Arthur in Spamalot seven years ago! Previously seen as Banquo in the “Scottish Play”,  Dick Dudgeon in The Devil’s Disciple and the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Playing the Inspector/Director is proving to be a great fun mix of silly and serious. Brodie would like to thank his son Solomon for his support and dedicates his performances to his Dad, Fraser McGruer, who no doubt would have enjoyed this show.

Zachary Howell – Jonathan
Zach is thrilled to make his OSLT debut. After previously appearing in Redeemer University’s Waiting for Godot, he has broken a two-year stage hiatus. He would like to thank John and the production team for this opportunity for a drop-dead performance.

Tiffany McMillin – Denise
Tiffany is excited to be on stage for this hilarious play and to work with the members of OSLT again! Most recently in Something Rotten! she is trading her tap shoes for a morning suit and moustache. She is incredibly grateful to her husband for supporting her love of theatre and to OSLT for giving her the chance to push her boundaries.

Aaron Crose – Robert
Grateful to practice the craft in a room someone else pays rent for, Aaron is an actor and aspiring multi-hyphenate, forever in search of funky new creative hats to wear. Trained in Theatre Performance at Humber, Aaron moved into voiceover for clients like Hershey’s and Bell, also appearing in HBO’s Hop (2024). Aaron is elated to be working with such a talented cast and crew and… Line?!”

Lacey Mooney – Sandra
Lacey is a long time OSLT member having been involved in over 20 productions. Roles last year included Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Nostrodomus in Something Rotten!. She is thrilled to be sharing the stage and working with so many friends and kick-butt people.

Ridgley Dier – Max
Ridgley is thrilled to be back on the OSLT stage for his seventh production! A graduate of Sheridan College’s Music Theatre Prep Program, he made his Toronto debut with Acting Up Stage Company’s One Song Glory. Past credits include The PROM, Something Rotten!, Beauty and the Beast, Spelling Bee, Carousel, and more. Thanks to my family and friends for their love and support. Always be true, and most importantly, be you!

CREW

John Flynn – Director
John has acted in numerous productions over the years including Hamlet, I Hate Hamlet, Act of the Imagination, Spelling Bee and most recently One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. In 2015 he made his debut as director with Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap returning in 2023 to direct The Game’s Afoot. John is very pleased to work alongside a talented cast and crew in bringing this legendary farce to our stage.

Kathleen Murphy – Producer
Kathleen has been a dedicated member of the OSLT since 2015 and is thrilled to be back in the producer’s role working with such an incredible team! She has produced a number of OSLT shows over the years and will be back at it next season as producer for Witness For The Prosecution. She has also been seen on stage, most recently appearing in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2021), You, Me, and a Bit of Driftwood (2023), and the one-act play Theory of Accelerated Hotness (2024).  She also sits as Secretary on the OSLT Board of Directors. Kathleen would like to thank the entire The Play That Goes Wrong company for their dedication and enthusiasm and hopes everyone enjoys this hilarious show as much as this team has enjoyed bringing it to the Roxy stage!

Kat Ruck – Stage Manager
Kat is excited to make her debut as Stage Manager for OSLT’s The Play That Goes Wrong. This marks her first time in this role with OSLT on this scale, and she is thrilled to bring her love for theatre to this hilariously chaotic production. Kat has previously contributed to OSLT & RYC in various roles, including lead props for Spelling Bee and Beauty and the Beast, Assistant Stage Manager for Willy Wonka, and Stage Manager for the One Act Plays and The Addams Family. Kat’s stage debut was in Something Rotten!, but she’s especially excited to manage the madness and fun of The Play That Goes Wrong. She hopes you enjoy the show as much as she has enjoyed working with this incredible cast and crew.

Stephanie Bumstead – Assistant Stage Manager
Stephanie is thrilled to add another show to her ever-growing list of theatrical adventures. By day, she wrangles children as a semi-professional child herder and art teacher; by night, she champions creativity, community, and a well-timed participation dance. A lover of theatre, books, travel, and social justice, Stephanie is passionate about smashing the patriarchy and championing diversity, equity, and inclusion. With a federal election on the horizon, she urges everyone to vote strategically for a better future. She also deeply loves her husband, Daniel. Hi, Daniel!

Valerie Prettie – Assistant Stage Manager
Val has been an active member serving OSLT for more than 25 years. Throughout that time, she has worn many hats around the theatre. In this production, she has three hats on, as Assistant Stage Manager, Lead Hair Design, and Set Painting. Many thanks to Mary Churchill for her hair expertise every night!  Val’s other interests include bartending and ushering. Thanks to Director John Flynn, Stage Manager Kat Ruck, and Paul Welch plus the entire cast and crew who work together to put this show on the Roxy Stage. “Sit back and enjoy this hilarious comedy.”

Fiona Smith – Assistant Stage Manager
Fiona is excited to be in the role of ASM once again! She would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to be a part of this hilarious show.

Jamie Smith – Set Design & Build
Although Jamie has helped out on many set builds, this is his first time as lead builder and designer. When John first reached out and asked if he would be interested in taking on the project, he thought why not, what could possibly go wrong! Even though this has been a complex set for a first-time lead, he has learned a lot, had a lot of fun doing it and most importantly, could not have done it without the help and guidance of his mentor, Paul Nicholson and the crew of talented builders, Paul Welch, Dan Herrick, Jack Goad, Michael Jeavons, Peter Leonard, and Andrew Watt. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication!

Paul Welch – Set Painting & Decor
Sometimes one job flows into another. Set paint involves collaborating with other team leads to make the big picture. Paul has previously done set paint for The Games Afoot as well as assisting on other plays such as Gorgeous Gallivanting Goddesses and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Sometimes you just grab a roller or brush and help out. Mind the wet paint and enjoy the show.

Debbie Morris – Props
Debbie is OSLT lead for props and has been props lead for many plays but this one has been a true challenge. Thank you to Paul for his ingenuity and Lisa for her focus and reliability. If you are watching the show in our second week, and there are no props, we apologize…they all broke!

Martha Tettenborn – Wardrobe
This is Martha’s first time as Lead for Wardrobe, but she has lots of experience with the “backstage ballet”, crewing in a variety of productions over the past 10 years. She particularly loves the craziness of the big musical shows, including Spamalot, Sister Act, Beauty and the Beast, Something Rotten! and most recently The Prom. Under the mentorship of OSLT wardrobe lead (and backstage pal) Cathie Tilley, she has designed an “earnest but slightly Wrong” wardrobe for the Cornley Drama Society.  “Thanks to my dear Mike for falling in love with OSLT and dragging me into this wonderful community!”

Nicole Gardiner – Make-Up
Nicole graduated from Completions College of Makeup in 2012, and a big part of her career has been focused on the bridal industry. Recently, she’s had the opportunity to work on two Roxy Young Company plays, which has been a fantastic experience. Now, she’s excited to bring her skills to The Play That Goes Wrong and work with such a talented cast to help make the production even more special!

Bill Murphy – Lighting Design
Bill is hoping that old dogs can learn new tricks as OSLT continues to build the capacity of The Roxy by purchasing LED lighting fixtures to compliment the existing inventory of incandescent lights. The learning curve can be steep, but Bill is most appreciative of the programming support from Kathleen Cassidy, the design instruction from David Beisel, and the technical support from Gary Byers, our hard working and indispensable House Technician. A big thanks to the rest of the Lighting Team, the wonderful cast and crew of The Play That Goes Wrong.

Michael Johnston – Sound Design
Michael has been an active member of OSLT since he played Tim in Noises Off. Since then he has been involved in many performances as an Actor, Stage Manager and tech. Michael’s most recent role was Peter in Prelude to a Kiss. Michael is looking forward to his first Director position on next year’s The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. Michael would like to thank his teammate Kara Gibson for her help with this show!

Jodi Armstrong – Prompter
Jodi is backstage in the role of prompter for this show. She joined the OSLT in 2019 and still hasn’t tried every job here, but she’s trying to. You can usually find her backstage for a production or serving up drinks behind the bar as she prefers to leave the performing to the talented OSLT actors. The script is memorized, and she follows along each line carefully in the hopes no one will say “LINE!”. Thanks to the entire cast and crew for letting her tag along on this hilarious show.
